MAIN DATA

This course is a elective of the Telecommunications Engineer Degree by the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (P94). It is taught in the fifth year of courses (6 credits, 4.8 ECTS).

In the first semester of 2013/2014, lectures are held at room A-137 (room change, previous B9), Monday-Thursday from 12:00 to 14:00.

MOTIVATION

Operations research studies operations management within an organization. It has many applications, such as manufacturing, transportation, construction, telecommunications, planning, finance, health sciences, public administration and design.

Operations research includes a wide range of techniques, most of them mathematical, which supports decision-making, using a scientific method. The general objective of operations research is using mathematical modeling, statistical analysis  and mathematical optimization methods to arrive at optimal or near-optimal solutions to complex decision-making problems. Some of the tools used by operational researchers, and to be introduced in this course are:

1. Mathematical optimization techniques, including linear and non-linear programming, dynamic programming, discrete programming and multiple criteria optimization,

2. Search algorithms,

3. Game Theory,

4. Decision support techniques, and

5. Simulation.

By the end of the course, the student will:

1. learn the principles of operations research, in particular building decision models and defining optimization problems.

2. know some of the mathematical tools used for operations research, and their applicability to the resolution of given practical problems

3. be aware of the different problems of each method.

Summing up, the student will be able to analyze and solve simple decision-making problems by using the described tools.
